Community Connections (CCP)

A community Connection is a special friendship that results when a volunteer is matched with an adult with a developmental disability. Together, they form a community partnership in which they spend a few hours each month exploring community activities they both enjoy. Activities can be simple and fun. They might include going to the park or mall, walking in the park, going out for dinner, going to the movies, museums, the library, or sporting events.

Individuals in the CCP are adults (18 or older) with developmental disabilities living in Orange County. They may reside with their families, in group homes, supported apartments, or their own homes.

Volunteers are adults (18 and older) who are interested in spending 4-8 hours a month becoming a friend and exploring the community. There is no experience necessary. The Arc provides orientation, training, and ongoing support.

Up with Orange County Self-Advocacy

This self-advocacy group meets the 3 rd Wednesday of every month. The group elects its own officers, contributes significantly to the agenda of each meeting, and handles most of its own responsibilities. The Arc of Orange County is present to advise the group when needed. Past topics of discussion and learning have included fire safety, hurricane preparedness, fundraising for fallen firefighters, and planning group outings to the North Carolina State Fair.
